"Everyday is a fresh start"
Art-2D 2020-21
My favorite artwork would have to be the final artwork. I like that my artwork looked neat and easy to see what everything was. I like that it felt like it was easy because I didn't feel rushed and I had good time management. If I could redo any of my artworks it would be the deer antler. I think if I worked on it at home and at school I could've made it look way better, and I felt like I spent most of my time trying to figure out what media I wanted to use. Something that I learned in art class was to do what you know you can for sure do and then add on to it and make it better. I think that would help me because I feel like I usually take more time then I need to. One thing that I wish we would've had time to do in art class was to screen print. I thought it was fun to do last year for art class.

Before Artwork was Finished: For the final artwork we had to choose whether to draw are face or draw stuff that relate to us in a personal way. I would say my artwork relates the most to one of Frank Big Bears artwork. I would say that I like every individual drawing on my artwork, but I don't like the fact that they don't all fit together into one category. I need to still add a little more to the drawing portion, but then I need to paint it with watercolors. I am excited to see the final artwork, but I need to stay on track and work a little harder consider the fact that the is only on more full class day to finish up my artwork.
After Artwork was Finished: I like how my artwork turned out. I think I did a pretty good job of blending the watercolor paints together. I love everything about my artwork and I am happy with the way it turned out. I think the only thing that was complicated about the artwork were the stars on the flag which was an easy fix. I used white puffy paint to make the stars. I would say my favorite part of the artwork is the caribou coffee cup because I like how the blue dots turned out on the lid, and the deer and pheasant because I like how they are overlapping with the two different colored browns. I showed Engage and Persist as well as Stretch and Explore. I showed Engage and Persist because I used personal info about myself to make an artwork. I showed Stretch and Explore because I used watercolors again and I think I have learned from my last artwork and it showed through in the blending of my artwork. For my final artwork I am going to do a drawing of all the stuff I like. I think I am going to draw everything and then use watercolors to fill it in. I would say that my artwork is based on Frank Big Bear's artworks, but with a little twist. I am excited to get started and see what the artwork will look like in the end. Right now I am working on figuring out what and how I want to piece my artwork together. Some studio habits that I am showing right now are express and envision. I am showing express because I am creating an artwork based on my personal life. I am showing envision because I am trying to envision what my artwork should look like and how I want to create it.
In class we tried collage. I got my inspiration from a collage landscape off online. Two studio habits that I think I showed while making the collage are Engage and persist, and Developing craft. Everything in my artwork was supposed to be there. I worked hard to get it done and it took me roughly an 3 hours. I want every artwork that I make to be meaningful and something I love. I love landscapes that have lakes, trees, and beautiful skies. I think I put a lot of effort in and I think it turned out great.
For my artwork we had to choose a paint media from the painting boot camp, and then decide what kind of seascape, landscape, or cityscape we wanted to do for our projects. In my artwork I painted a big tree on the left side with a purple, blue, and pink sky and clouds with a sun behind it. In the middle of the artwork there are trees with a cabin and birds on a cliff with a waterfall flowing down it and more trees on different cliff levels. I decided to paint it because I enjoy the outdoors and I think it would a cool site to see. I feel like it would be nice, relaxful, and peaceful to sit down and look at the view. I am naming my artwork "The Cliff Side View" because I think the name really suits the artwork. I chose watercolors for my artwork because I never really use them and I thought it would be fun to see what I could do with them. I had a few issues with the paint bleeding together, but I was able to overcome that obstacle. I think if I used actual watercolor paper it wouldn't have bled as much, but I think that the artwork it pretty good overall. I got my inspiration for my artwork from looking at watercolor landscapes online. The techniques and tools I used a lot of was layering, blending, wet on wet, and mixing colors. Something I learned from this artwork is to not sweat the small stuff because it can be fixed or made to look even better than what you expected. The Landscape project is coming along. I am having a little difficulty with the watercolors bleeding together in certain areas, but I am working through it. I am having a lot of fun with the watercolors. I like that there is so much to do with them. Some studio habits that I think I am showing while making this artwork are stretch and explore as well as Develop craft. To stretch and explore you need to show how you tried something hard and the different techniques you used along the way. I show I am stretching and exploring by trying the wet on wet technique, the layering technique, and mixing colors together. I also show it because watercolor is a pretty hard material to deal and work with. To develop craft you have to learn to use new tools and materials and the practices of an art form. I show developing craft because I am trying watercolors which is something I haven't used in my school artworks.
Painting boot camp gives you definitions, types of paint, and painting skills and techniques to help you learn and grow as a painter. We had a choice to use paints or another media because we went into online school and we may or may not have paints but it was prefered. I had to choose between acrylic and watercolor paints because those were the only paints I had at home. I chose to use watercolor paints because I have never used them for a school art project, which I think shows that I can Stretch and explore. By also doing the painting boot camp I learned to develop craft. I showed it when I looked at pictures online, watching youtube videos and reading/ painting the techniques they showed in the painting boot camp. Landscape IdeasI'm not 100% sure on exactly what I am doing for my landscape yet. Some things I want in the artwork are trees, a waterfall, and maybe a house or cabin of some sort. I got my inspiration by looking up pictures of watercolor landscapes. I have also tried to look up youtube videos because I wanted to get a better idea of how to blend darker colors with lighter colors.
For my first artwork we had to bring an object from home. I decided to bring a deer antler from home, and then look up a pinecone and add it to the drawing to make it a tiny bit more interesting. I decided to bring the antler in for my artwork because it is a big part of my family and I. I named my artwork "The Antler." I chose to use a regular #2 pencil for my artwork. I was debating between pencil, colored pencil, and markers. I didn't like the markers because it was hard to shade and texturize with them. I didn't like the colored pencils because I couldn't find the right colors and it was harder to shade with them. The pencil made it easier to shade and texturize the artwork. I used a blending pencil for my artwork for the first time. One thing that I didn't realize I was doing was in the beginning of my artwork was erasing parts of the antlers to create texture. The artwork means something to me because of my family. My goals as an artist is to learn how to create and come up with new techniques. I think this artwork did help me reach my goals because I used the erasing technique to create a lot of my drawing. I would have to say that my artwork didn't 100% turn out the way I thought it would because my original thought was to have pheasant feathers sitting underneath the antler and a pinecone sitting on both sides of the antlers. One thing that I learned that will help me in the future with other artworks will be to start out with something I know you will accomplish in a good amount of time and then add more to it if you have time. Dan Bruggeman is a Minnesota artist that paints artwork where landscapes and man made things come together. Some examples that were said in the video I watched were skiing, tubing, sledding, and amusement parks, and how they come together with the nature that surrounds them. In my drawing that I drew from a picture I saw online, was people tubing down a hill in the far distance with the snow and trees surrounding them, and a bench next to a fire with someone's shoes poking out from the bottom of the frame. I think in a way the place was enhanced because you get to enjoy being outside surrounded by trees and you also get to enjoy a nice warm fire and sledding.
A "thinking drawing" is what the artist Wayne Thiebaud calls his sketches he makes to help him figure out what he wants to do for his next artwork. Thiebaud takes the sketches he has drawn and combines them to come up with ideas to make his artworks interesting and dynamic. When looking at his artwork "Rows of Ties" the ties on the left side all have a simple pattern, and then looking to the right there is one tie slightly moved away from the other ties which has a more complex pattern on it. I think he separates the tie away from the rest because he trying to say that being normal makes you boring and that its okay to be different from the rest.
